About Me!

My name is Weston Koyama, and my professional life has been shaped by both law and technology. As an attorney, I have dedicated my work to serving people who are often the most marginalized in Portland society, including individuals facing poverty, instability, disability, and serious barriers to accessing justice. This work has required patience, careful listening, and the ability to communicate with people from many different backgrounds and life experiences. I believe those same qualities are also essential in teaching language well.

私の名前はウェストン・コヤマです。私の職業人生は、法律とテクノロジーという二つの分野によって形づくられてきました。弁護士として、私はポートランド社会の中でも特に周縁化されやすい人々、つまり、貧困、不安定な生活、障害、そして司法へのアクセスの難しさに直面している方々を支える仕事に力を注いできました。この仕事には、忍耐強さ、丁寧に話を聞く姿勢、そして多様な背景や人生経験を持つ方々と誠実に向き合う力が必要です。そして私は、それらの資質は語学を教えるうえでも非常に大切だと考えています。

In addition to my legal work, I am also a programmer who designs and builds my own applications. I am especially interested in creating practical tools that solve real problems, and I have experience self-hosting my own apps and managing the technology behind them myself. This gives me a strong understanding not only of programming, but also of how technology is used in everyday professional life. For students who are interested in English for technology, computing, or analytical communication, I bring real-world experience rather than just textbook knowledge.

弁護士としての仕事に加えて、私はプログラマーとして自分自身でアプリを設計し、開発しています。私は特に、現実の課題を解決する実用的なツールを作ることに関心があり、自作アプリを自分でホスティングし、その運用も自ら管理してきました。そのため、私は単にプログラミングの知識があるだけでなく、テクノロジーが実際の仕事や日常の中でどのように使われているかについても深く理解しています。テクノロジー、コンピュータ、または論理的なコミュニケーションに関する英語を学びたい方に対して、机上の知識ではなく、実際の経験に基づいた指導ができます。

My background also allows me to teach English with unusual range. I can help students with everyday conversation, but I can also support learners who want to understand professional English, legal ideas, formal writing, and technical vocabulary. Because I have worked in demanding professional environments and have spent years helping people communicate across difficult circumstances, I try to make my lessons both intellectually serious and personally supportive. My goal is to help students grow in confidence while learning English that is truly useful in the real world.
